The New Bedford Whaling Museum is the world’s largest institution interpreting the historical interaction of humans with whales, a narrative which encompasses the globe and spans recorded history. One of the oldest museums in Massachusetts, it has remained in continuous operation since 1903 under its founding organization, the Old Dartmouth Historical Society. With an annual visitation of approximately 93,000, the Museum offers formal school programming and more than 40 cultural programs and performances annually, as well as a broad range of public lectures and symposia. A staff of 10 FTE’s is assisted by 163 volunteers. The Museum has an annual budget of $2.8 million and is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
